Most Nigerian passport and visa applications are now processed online. Paper forms have been largely replaced by digital applications through the NIS portal and the e-Visa portal. The guides below will help you navigate the online systems.

Passport Application

Online Application (Required)

All passport applications — new, renewal, and replacement — must be submitted through the Nigeria Immigration Service online portal.

Step-by-Step Guide:
  1. Visit passport.immigration.gov.ng and create an account
  2. Select “Fresh Application” or “Renewal” as appropriate
  3. Choose your passport type (32-page or 64-page)
  4. Fill in all personal details accurately (must match NIN records)
  5. Upload a passport photograph meeting NIS specifications
  6. Select your preferred embassy for biometric capture
  7. Pay the fee online ($150 or $230 for diaspora)
  8. Print your application receipt and payment confirmation
  9. Book a biometric appointment at your chosen embassy

Supporting Documents Checklist

  • National Identification Number (NIN) — mandatory
  • Current or expired passport (original)
  • Birth certificate or age declaration
  • Proof of legal residence in host country
  • Two recent passport photos (white background, 35mm x 45mm)
  • Marriage certificate (if name has changed)
  • Court affidavit and newspaper publication (if name change)

Visa Application (e-Visa)

Nigeria introduced the e-Visa system in May 2025, replacing the Visa on Arrival programme. Citizens of 177 eligible countries can apply online.

e-Visa Application Process:
  1. Visit portal.immigration.gov.ng
  2. Select your visa type (Tourist, Business, Transit)
  3. Complete the online application form
  4. Upload required documents (passport scan, photo, invitation letter for business)
  5. Pay the visa fee online
  6. Receive approved e-Visa by email within 24-48 hours
  7. Print the e-Visa and present at Nigerian port of entry

Documents Required for Visa Application

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Completed application form
  • Invitation letter (for business visa)
  • Hotel reservation or host address
  • Return flight itinerary
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate

Birth Registration Form

Nigerian citizens who give birth abroad can register the birth at their nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate.

Required Documents

  • Birth certificate issued by the host country (original and copy)
  • Passport of both parents (originals and copies)
  • Marriage certificate of parents (if applicable)
  • Two passport photographs of the child
  • Completed birth registration form (obtained at the embassy)
  • Registration fee

Note: It is advisable to register a birth within 60 days. Late registration may require additional documentation.

Document Legalization

Documents issued abroad may need authentication by a Nigerian embassy for use in Nigeria.

Process

  1. Have your document notarized by a notary public in the host country
  2. Get it authenticated by the host country’s foreign affairs ministry (apostille)
  3. Submit to the Nigerian embassy for final authentication
  4. Pay the legalization fee
  5. Collection typically within 3-5 working days

NIN Enrolment (Diaspora)

The National Identification Number is now mandatory for passport applications. Nigerians abroad can enrol at designated centres, usually at embassies or partner agencies.

Enrolment Process

  1. Visit the NIMC website (nimc.gov.ng/diaspora) or check with your local embassy
  2. Complete online pre-enrolment if available
  3. Book an appointment at your nearest enrolment centre
  4. Attend in person for biometric capture (fingerprints and photograph)
  5. Receive your 11-digit NIN within 1-5 working days

Documents Required

  • Valid Nigerian passport or birth certificate
  • Proof of address in host country
  • Passport photograph

The NIN is permanent and does not expire. Once issued, it is linked to all your government records.
