Nigerian e-Passport (Biometric Passport) Guide

What is the Nigerian e-Passport?

The Nigerian e-Passport is a biometric travel document that contains an embedded electronic chip storing the holder’s personal data, photograph, and fingerprints. It complies with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and was introduced to replace the older Machine Readable Passport (MRP).

e-Passport Features

Security Features

  • Embedded microchip with encrypted biometric data
  • Fingerprint data for identity verification
  • Digital photograph stored on chip
  • ICAO-compliant machine-readable zone
  • Anti-fraud measures including laser engraving
  • Polycarbonate data page resistant to tampering

  • 32-page Standard — 5-year validity ($150 abroad)
  • 64-page Standard — 10-year validity ($230 abroad)

The 64-page version is recommended for frequent travellers as it provides more space for visas and stamps.

NIN Requirement

Since 2024, a National Identification Number (NIN) is mandatory for all passport applications. You cannot apply for an e-passport without a valid NIN.

How to Get Your NIN Abroad

  1. Visit the NIMC diaspora page at nimc.gov.ng/diaspora
  2. Find your nearest NIN enrolment centre (usually at Nigerian embassies)
  3. Complete online pre-enrolment if available
  4. Attend in person for biometric capture
  5. Receive your 11-digit NIN within 1-5 working days

The NIN is permanent and never expires. It links to your biometric data and all government records.

Common Questions

Can I still use my old (non-biometric) passport?

No. Nigeria phased out the old Machine Readable Passport. All passports issued since 2007 are e-Passports. If you hold an older passport, you must apply for a new e-Passport.

Is the e-Passport accepted worldwide?

Yes. The Nigerian e-Passport meets ICAO 9303 standards and is accepted at all international borders. The biometric chip speeds up immigration processing at e-gates where available.

What if my e-Passport chip is damaged?

If the chip is damaged, the passport may still be valid for travel as it contains a machine-readable zone. However, you may experience delays at immigration. It is advisable to apply for a replacement.

Can children get an e-Passport?

Yes. Children of any age can be issued an e-Passport. Both parents must be present or provide a notarized consent letter. Children under 16 receive a 5-year passport only.
