Calabar Travel Guide
The Paradise City - home to Africa's biggest street party, pristine rainforests, and Nigeria's friendliest people
About Calabar
Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, is widely regarded as Nigeria's most tourist-friendly city. Known as "Canaan City" or the "Paradise City," it is one of the cleanest and most peaceful cities in Nigeria. Calabar sits on the Calabar River near the border with Cameroon.
The city played a significant role in colonial history as one of the first centres of European contact in Nigeria. It was the capital of the Oil Rivers Protectorate and later the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. This colonial history is visible in the architecture and museums.
Today, Calabar is best known for the annual Calabar Carnival (Africa's biggest street party), its proximity to the Cross River National Park (one of Africa's oldest rainforests), and its thriving eco-tourism scene.
Top Attractions
1. Calabar Carnival (December)
Africa's Biggest Street Party. Held annually from 26 December to 1 January, the Calabar Carnival attracts over 2 million visitors. Five competing bands (Bayside, Passion 4, Seagull, Master Blaster, Freedom) parade through the streets with elaborate costumes, choreographed dances, and live music. The carnival includes a float parade, cultural displays, food festivals, and an international carnival queen competition.
2. Cross River National Park
Comprising two divisions - Oban Division (south) and Okwangwo Division (north) - this park protects one of Africa's oldest remaining tropical rainforests. The park is home to the rare Cross River gorilla (world's most endangered great ape, fewer than 300 remain), chimpanzees, drill monkeys, forest elephants, and over 950 butterfly species.
3. Cercopan Primate Sanctuary
A conservation centre dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating endangered primates. Visitors can see drill monkeys, guenons, and other endangered species in semi-wild enclosures. Educational tours available. Located in the Calabar Free Trade Zone area.
4. Calabar Museum (Old Residency Building)
Housed in a beautiful colonial building built in 1884, this museum chronicles the history of Calabar from pre-colonial times through the slave trade era and colonial period. Exhibits include photographs, maps, cultural artefacts, and documents from the colonial administration.
5. Slave History Museum (Slaves' Museum)
Located near the old slave port, this museum documents Calabar's dark history as a major slave trade port. The museum tells the story of the transatlantic slave trade through artefacts, chains, documents, and multimedia presentations. A powerful and important historical site.
6. Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort
A large entertainment and shopping complex featuring a water park, cinema, shopping centre, and conference facilities. Though it has seen periods of reduced activity, it remains one of Nigeria's most ambitious leisure developments and is undergoing revitalisation.
7. Kwa Falls
A beautiful waterfall approximately 30km from Calabar city centre, surrounded by lush tropical forest. The falls are accessible via a short hike and are popular for swimming and picnics. Best visited during or just after the rainy season when water flow is at its peak.
8. Agbokim Waterfalls
Located about 3 hours from Calabar near the Cameroon border, these seven-faced waterfalls cascade into a pool surrounded by tropical vegetation. Often described as one of the most beautiful natural sites in southern Nigeria.
