Document Apostille & Authentication for Nigeria

What is an Apostille?

An apostille is a form of authentication for documents intended for use in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. Nigeria became a member in 2023, which simplifies the legalization of documents between member countries.

Foreign Documents for Use in Nigeria

If you have a document issued in another country that you need to use in Nigeria, the authentication process depends on whether the issuing country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.

From Hague Convention Countries (Simplified)

  1. Obtain an apostille stamp from the competent authority in the country where the document was issued
  2. The apostilled document is then directly recognized in Nigeria without further embassy authentication

From Non-Convention Countries (Traditional Legalization)

  1. Notarize the document with a notary public in the issuing country
  2. Get authentication from the foreign affairs ministry of the issuing country
  3. Submit to the Nigerian embassy in that country for final attestation
