Document Apostille & Authentication for Nigeria
What is an Apostille?
An apostille is a form of authentication for documents intended for use in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. Nigeria became a member in 2023, which simplifies the legalization of documents between member countries.
Foreign Documents for Use in Nigeria
If you have a document issued in another country that you need to use in Nigeria, the authentication process depends on whether the issuing country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.
From Hague Convention Countries (Simplified)
- Obtain an apostille stamp from the competent authority in the country where the document was issued
- The apostilled document is then directly recognized in Nigeria without further embassy authentication
From Non-Convention Countries (Traditional Legalization)
- Notarize the document with a notary public in the issuing country
- Get authentication from the foreign affairs ministry of the issuing country
- Submit to the Nigerian embassy in that country for final attestation
Nigerian Documents for Use Abroad
