Frequently Asked Questions

Immigration authorities in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand require formal proof of English proficiency from all applicants, regardless of nationality. Being from an English-speaking country does not exempt you. IELTS serves as a standardised measure that ensures all applicants meet the same language threshold. Some countries exempt citizens of specific nations (e.g., the US and Ireland exempt each other), but Nigeria is not on these exemption lists.

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date for immigration purposes. Some universities may accept older scores, but immigration applications (UK, Canada, Australia, NZ) strictly require results within the 2-year window. Plan your test date carefully in relation to your visa application timeline.

Yes, computer-delivered IELTS is available in Lagos and Abuja. The content and scoring are identical to the paper test. The main advantage is faster results (3-5 days vs 13 days) and more flexible test dates. The Speaking test is still conducted face-to-face with an examiner, even for computer-based tests.

IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is required specifically for UK visa applications. The test content is identical to standard IELTS, but it is administered at approved SELT centres with enhanced security measures including video recording. It costs slightly more than standard IELTS. If you are applying for a UK visa, ensure you book IELTS for UKVI, not standard IELTS.

Nigerian IELTS candidates typically score between Band 5.5 and 7.0 overall. Speaking and Listening tend to be stronger components, while Writing is often the most challenging. The average for Nigerian academic test-takers is around Band 6.0-6.5. With dedicated preparation, achieving Band 7.0+ is very realistic for educated Nigerian professionals.
